With its massive physique, dark base coloration, and typical armor, it appears extremely primitive and impressive. This species is known for its strong affinity for driftwood, which forms an important part of its diet.

Panaque bathyphilus is primarily crepuscular and nocturnal and prefers well-structured aquariums with plenty of driftwood and hiding places. Due to its final size and high food intake, powerful filtration is essential. This species is particularly suitable for experienced aquarists with sufficient space.
