Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus)

The Senegal Bichir is one of the most well-known and robust species of its genus. It originates from West Africa and exhibits the typical prehistoric appearance with an elongated body, armored scales, and individual dorsal fin rays. This species is crepuscular and nocturnal, spending most of the day resting calmly on the bottom or in hiding spots.

Care Instructions:

• Size: Up to approx. 35 cm

• Water parameters: Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5

• Food: Carnivorous – fish pieces, shrimp, mussel meat, frozen and live food

• Behavior: Calm, solitary, eats smaller fish

Housing Notes:

• Minimum aquarium length: approx. 150 cm

• Aquarium with sand substrate, many roots and caves

• Cover the aquarium well – Bichirs are excellent escape artists

• Peaceful towards fish of similar size
