Ornate Bichir (Polypterus ornatipinnis)

The Ornate Bichir is an impressive species of the genus Polypterus from Central Africa. It is considered a primitive predatory fish with a distinct character and striking markings.

Care Instructions:

• Size: Up to approx. 60 cm when fully grown

• Water Parameters: Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5; soft to medium water

• Food: Meaty – e.g., fish pieces, shrimp, frozen or live food

• Behavior: Bottom-dweller, crepuscular and nocturnal; rather calm, but predatory behavior present – smaller fish are considered prey

• Difficulty Level: Only for experienced aquarists with a large aquarium

Notes on Husbandry:

• Minimum Tank Length: approx. 200–250 cm or more for adult specimens

• Setup with sand substrate, many hiding places (roots, caves) and a well-secured lid (prone to jumping and escaping)

• Caution with cohabitation: only with equally sized or larger robust fish; small fish will be eaten
