Pterosynchiropus splendidus, the "Mandarin fish," is one of the most vibrantly colored fish in reef aquariums. Its pattern of strong blue, green, and orange appears almost painted in the aquarium. As a captive-bred specimen, this Mandarin fish is particularly valuable: It is significantly more robust in terms of feeding, more stress-resistant, and better adapted to life in an aquarium than wild-caught specimens. Acclimatization is therefore reliable and does not require long periods of feeding live food.

It searches at a calm pace for small food items among the rocks and feels most comfortable in well-established tanks with stable microfauna. With peaceful tankmates, it displays relaxed, beautifully observable behavior.
