The Pleco Sucker Catfish (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) is one of the most well-known and useful bottom dwellers in aquaristics. This peaceful large catfish originates from the river systems of South America and impresses with its attractive pattern of dark brown and light spots – a true classic among algae eaters.

The Pterygoplichthys pardalis is robust, long-lived, and extremely effective at controlling algae. It reliably keeps roots, stones, and aquarium panes clean without damaging plants. Due to its peaceful behavior, it can be excellently socialized with other calm species.

🌿 Characteristics & Husbandry:
🐠 Fish size: M (6–7 cm, juvenile)
🌎 Origin: South America (Brazil, Peru, Colombia) – Wild-caught/Bred
🌡️ Temperature: 24–30 °C
💧 pH value: 6.0–7.8
⚖️ General hardness: up to 20 °dGH
🐟 Social behavior: Peaceful, but territorial as an adult
🌾 Aquarium: From 300 l, with strong filtration, roots, hiding places & free swimming space

🍽️ Feeding:
The Pleco Sucker Catfish is an omnivore with a preference for plants. It eats algae, biofilm, and plant-based food such as spirulina, algae wafers, vegetable chips, blanched cucumber, zucchini, or spinach. Additionally, it accepts frozen food like Artemia or Cyclops.

💡 Tip:
Since Pterygoplichthys pardalis can grow up to 35 cm, a large, well-filtered aquarium is a must. Roots are important for digestion and also serve as hiding places. A slight current and regular water changes promote its well-being.

👉 Conclusion:
The Pleco Sucker Catfish (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) is a peaceful, robust algae eater with a distinctive pattern – ideal for large, natural South American aquariums.
