Ogre Catfish (Asterophysus batrachus)

The Ogre Catfish is an impressive and highly distinctive predator from South America, immediately noticeable for its broad head, large mouth, and robust body shape. This species is known for swallowing prey almost as large as itself – a spectacular behavior that makes it so popular among experienced aquarists. Despite its fearsome appearance, it is a calm, rather passive ambush predator.

Asterophysus batrachus prefers quiet, dimly lit aquariums with ample hiding places and an open substrate area. Since it eats anything that fits into its mouth, solitary keeping or cohabitation with very large, robust fish is necessary. Its robust nature makes it easy to care for, but it is clearly suited for advanced keepers.
