Madagascar Lace Plant - Aponogeton madagascariensis - Bulb

The Madagascar Lace Plant (Aponogeton fenestralis) is endemic to the island of Madagascar and can reach a height of up to 50 cm in an aquarium. Its unique lattice structure makes it a very popular solitary plant, but it also adds interesting accents in the background.

In nature, Aponogeton fenestralis grows in cool flowing waters. Its care in an aquarium can be demanding. If growth stagnates, the plant needs a resting phase of about four weeks. For this, it should be stored cool and dark in a separate tank. Afterwards, it can be returned to the aquarium. The addition of micronutrients and iron through the water column can help to extend this resting phase. However, a substrate that is too rich in nutrients is not well tolerated.

The robust tuber should be placed in the aquarium without burying it completely, so that it can unfold its fascinating lattice-shaped leaves.
