Payara (Hydrolycus scomberoides)

The Payara is a large, predatory freshwater fish from South America. It is known for its distinctive, pointed teeth and its fast hunting behavior. Suitable only for very experienced aquarists.

Care Instructions:

• Size: Up to approx. 90 cm, larger in exceptional cases

• Water parameters: Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5; soft to medium water preferred

• Food: Carnivorous – smaller fish, crustaceans, live or frozen food

• Behavior: Very active, territorial, skittish; single keeping or large tank for multiple fish

Notes on keeping:

• Minimum aquarium length: approx. 250 cm or longer

• Plenty of swimming space and structured hiding places required

• Do not keep with small fish – they will be seen as prey

• Suitable only for experienced aquarists

• 15-18cm at delivery
