Haemulon melanurum is a lively, calm schooling fish with striking yellow and black tail markings and a silvery body sheen. In the aquarium, it moves harmoniously in the open swimming area and appears very elegant due to its natural schooling behavior. As a farmed specimen, Haemulon melanurum is significantly more robust, readily accepts food, and is more stress-resistant than wild-caught specimens, which noticeably simplifies acclimation.
It is excellently suited for larger, well-structured reef tanks and exhibits peaceful, calm social behavior.
Advantages of farmed specimens:
• Better adaptation to aquarium conditions
• Reliably eats frozen and dry food
• Significantly less stress during transport and acclimation
• More sustainable alternative to wild-caught fish
Keeping:
• Prefers to be kept in small groups
• Open swimming space + structured setup
• Peaceful tank mates recommended
• Suitable for medium to large reef tanks
A calm, elegant schooling fish with a natural appearance – and as a farmed specimen, a valuable, sustainable choice for the reef aquarium.
