Fire Eel (Mastacembelus erythrotaenia) 30 - 40cm

Care instructions:

• Size: adult up to ~90–100 cm

• Aquarium size: adult animals should only be kept in very large tanks — recommended from ~600 L, better significantly more (large swimming space + hiding places)

• Water parameters: Temperature 24–28 °C; pH approx. 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral); moderate general hardness

• Food: carnivorous — worms, crustaceans, larger frozen or live foods; edible small fish are considered prey

• Behavior: crepuscular/nocturnal, burrowing/bottom-dwelling, shy and reclusive; generally solitary and territorial towards significantly smaller animals

• Housing notes: many hiding places (caves, roots), soft sandy bottom, tightly fitting lid (prone to jumping/escaping), high water quality through regular changes

Suitable for: only experienced aquarists with space for a very large, stably maintained tank. Not suitable for small community aquariums or with very small by-fish.
