African butterflyfish (Pantodon buchholzi)

The African Butterflyfish is one of the most extraordinary freshwater species. With its widely spread, wing-like pectoral fins and flat body shape, Pantodon buchholzi glides elegantly just below the water surface, resembling a hovering butterfly. This ancient species originates from the calm, plant-rich waters of West and Central Africa and captivates with its unique appearance and its calm, lurking behavior.

Pantodon buchholzi is a typical surface predator that snatches insects and small prey from the water surface. It is peaceful towards fish of similar or larger size, but will eat anything that fits into its mouth. A dense covering of floating plants, subdued lighting, and calm tankmates ensure that this special fish feels secure and exhibits its natural behavior.
