Acanthurus auranticavus – Orange-spot Surgeonfish

The Acanthurus auranticavus is a rare and attractive surgeonfish from the Western Pacific. Its dark grey to brownish body is highlighted by a distinctive orange spot behind the gill cover, which gives this species its name. With its elegant appearance and active swimming behaviour, it is a special eye-catcher for larger marine aquariums.

The Orange Spot Surgeonfish requires plenty of swimming space, good water quality, and a varied, predominantly herbivorous diet. It can be territorial towards conspecifics and other surgeonfish but can be well socialised with other robust reef inhabitants in sufficiently large aquariums. Its rarity and attractive markings make it a sought-after species for experienced marine aquarists.
